Starting work after the holidays: Tips and tricks on how to handle it

Taking a break from work is extremely important for work performance. It helps prevent many illnesses, demotivation, and burnout. If only the return wasn't so painful...

If you have the job of your dreams, you are one of the lucky ones who likes to relax, but has no problem starting up and working again at any time.
If you are not so lucky, there is no reason to feel bad. Not quite 100% desire to work can be caused, for example, by the fact that the rest was not long enough, or of the appropriate quality. Or the atmosphere at the workplace is not the best. There are many reasons why we do not feel like working so much after days off, but none of them are fundamentally important.
Because one way or another, you need to focus on the start.

Get ready, watch out, work!

Fans of New Year's resolutions certainly didn't forget to set some new commitments and goals for themselves in the work area. However, according to statistics, up to 80 percent of us stop following them by mid-February.
To truly turn goals into reality, it takes a well-thought-out strategy. The main point of this is to consider the size and attainability of the goal. Smaller goals are ideal.

But if you need your goal to be really big, fundamental, and significant, you need to break it down into smaller, more achievable parts. "A tangible interim result is very important for achieving a larger goal, because it can continuously maintain motivation to achieve it," Lívia Bachratá, Director of Public Affairs at Edenred, is convinced.

You should forget about the goals and resolutions that you have set for yourself in the past and always gave up on! There was a real reason why you did not achieve them, did not fulfill them. And maybe you just need to reformulate them. For example, instead of "I will learn German", you should set a goal of "I will learn German". Because learning and studying are two different things. While in the first the goal is out of sight, in the second it can be fulfilled every day.
"It doesn't matter at all that you've already made your resolutions. They can be changed, adjusted, innovated and started with something new at any time," encourages L. Bachratá.

Relaxation and rewards

Regardless of whether you have made resolutions or not, the important thing to get started with your work performance is to realize that you will not only be working, expending energy, and sweating blood. After all, rest is also an important part of work. "Not only employers, but also employees often forget this, because we live in an era that is focused on performance. However, this cannot be achieved and maintained without sufficient regeneration," continues L. Bachratá.

And that's why you need to reward yourself throughout the work week, month, and year and treat yourself not only to relaxation, but also to pleasure. Because a reward is a great motivator.
It doesn't have to be anything big, just a good book, a meal from your favorite restaurant, or a relaxing treatment at the salon - the Edenred card will help you with all the payments. It is an employee benefits card, popular with employees and employers alike, as it is extremely easy to top up credits for individual benefits.

"Maintaining a balance between work and personal life contributes to the overall satisfaction and motivation of employees, which is positively reflected in their work performance. Employers should not forget in 2025 that, in addition to financial rewards, non-financial forms of motivation, such as recognition, praise and development opportunities, also play an important role. A properly set motivation system that combines financial and non-financial rewards can significantly contribute to increasing work performance and overall satisfaction of employees, as well as maintaining their motivation and achieving set goals," warned the Director of Public Affairs at Edenred.

Soft start

After each extended absence from work, a pile of unfulfilled tasks, unanswered emails, or phone calls piles up. To avoid stress, frustration, and the belief that you can't handle it, it's worth following these steps:

  1. Choose an appropriate strategy and prioritize tasks: what needs to be done first, what needs to be done second, and what can wait. This system should be adhered to.
  2. First, scan your full email inbox with just your eyes and mark the emails that need to be addressed as a priority. Start with those.
  3. Take small breaks between work sessions. For example, 30 minutes of work and 5 minutes of rest helps you stay focused.
  4. Don't divide your efforts. What really needs to be done today, do today, and divide the rest into other days.
  5. Delegate.
  6. Breathe: Many of us forget to breathe when we are busy. Whenever you notice this, consciously expand your chest and take a few deep breaths, holding the air in your lungs for a few seconds. This is an excellent relaxation exercise.
  7. After the workday is over, praise yourself. You did your best. Feeling frustrated doesn't help anything, quite the opposite.
